Dave Tompkins, music journalist, historian, and author of How to Wreck a Nice Beach: The Vocoder from World War II to Hip-Hop, leads a discussion on the history of Miami bass and its cultural, political and geological impact on the Magic City. Lecture begins 6:30pm. (Doors open 6pm. Seating is limited. First come, first seated.) Following the lecture, stick around for a party led by DJ Dave Tompkins, who will be spinning the best of Miami “bass” music. Matej Krén @ Now Contemporary Art
Matej Krén was born in Trenčín in 1958. After graduating from the Applied Arts School in Bratislava he attends the Bratislava Fine Arts Academy, and later the Prague Fine Arts Academy. He takes part in many unofficial exhibitions, including Artprospekt, Posun artefaktu and Terén; he is selected for the International Students’ Exhibition in Kobe, Japan, where his work is awarded the Honor Award (1985).
From 1986 to 1988 he works on the animated film That’s a Movie, at the Bratři v triku film studio in Barrandov, Prague, which would later grant him invitations to festivals in Paris, Berlin and Huesca, Spain, and, in the latter, the highest award: the Danzante de Oro (1991). Since November 1989 he has worked at the transformation of the Bratislava Fine Arts Academy, among other things, by his teaching activity. Over the 90s he exhibits all over the world, including shows in Amsterdam, Berlin, Chicago, Paris, Seoul and Vienna. The Manifacture Nationale de Sévres, in Paris, invites him to its International Creativity Studio, where he works at a particular kind of projection on specially coated porcelain. His work is displayed at the Centre Georges Pompidou, at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art and at Jerusalem’s Israel Museum.
