Viktor Mitic

Viktor Mitic

in Artists

Viktor Mitic, a University of Toronto and Sheridan College graduate artist, classically trained in art schools in Europe, has produced a major body of work that spans a career of over two decades. First active in Belgrade in the 1980′s, he moved to Toronto in 1990 and fell in love with the city. For a number of years, Viktor was painting non-representational paintings using natural elements such as rain and hail to render surfaces of the paintings in oils on canvas. Viktor has recently developed a distinctive, some would say provocative, subject matter. As a figurative painter, he chooses both Canadian heroes such as Lord Beaverbrook and Robert McMichael, as well as international iconic images, and incorporates them into a flat, chromatic background. He later shoots the outline of the figures using various weapons and live ammunition. Strong colour, gold halos, figures well composed within the painting, gun powder burn, bullet holes—all accentuate the direct response of the artist to the contemporary world. Viktor has successfully integrated various materials into his recent body of work: charcoal, graphite, oil, acrylic, watercolour, pen and ink, and Japanese traditional natural pigment. He has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions in both private and public galleries; including the Toronto International Art Fair, Armory NYC, Art Chicago, Gallery Moos, Odon Wagner Contemporary, and most recently at the provincial museum of New Brunswick, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in an exhibition entitled, Re-imaging of Lord Beaverbrook.
